GEOLOGY

Geology is the science that deals with the history of development of earths landmass. Geoscientist collects and evaluates the data about the earth, formation of mountains, valleys, oceans, rivers, rocks, soil, flora, fauna etc.The mineral and oil deposits buried in the depths of the earth are also explored and excavated with the help of geoscientist.

The profession:
Chiefly, the vast realm of geology provides for careers as geographers, geologist and geophysicists. geographer study the physical phenomena on the earths surface such as topography, and climate of particular regions and understand how this effects the people living there. Geologist find their locus of study deep in the bowels of the earth. the formation and changes in the rock structure and the exploration of the mineral and oil deposits fall in the purview of the geologists projects. Geophysicists combine the knowledge of physics, chemistry and maths to understand the earths atmosphere, the play odd gravitational, magnetic and electronic forces, the speficities of ground and surface water, the mysterious dynamics of the oceans etc. Geologists and geophysicists usually work in the mining companies or use their engineering skills to negotiate problems related to constructing dams, tunnels, highway etc. There are numerous sub disciplines in the field of geology such as mineralogy, oceanography, marine geology ,petroleum geology ,paleontology, sesmology, volcanology, hydrology, hydrogeology, and meteorology the study of mineral foundation is the field of mineralogist. oceanographers explore the chemicals, biological and geological properties of the oceans. Marine geologist studies the ocean basin and the costal environment on continental borders. Petroleum geologists investigate oil and natural gas resources. Paleontologists study fossils in order to know more about past life. seismologist analyses the earthquake, volcanologists investigates volcanic phenomena. hydrologist study the surface and underground waters.Hydrogeologists investigate the geological aspects of the surface water. meteorologist are concern with the study of weather phenomena.

Job market:
Geologist can find employment in mines, oil exploration companies, seismological and meteorological, large construction glomirates, related consultancy and firms and in government organisation like geological survey of India.

Training programme:
Programme in geology are offered by national institute like IIT,Khargapur,BHU Institute of Technology,Varanasi and School of Mines, Dhanbad. The entry to courses in this institution is through the IIT-JEE.

Eligibility :
The basic requirement for career in geosciences is Post Graduation .The aspirant can start with the bachelors degree in geology/physics and engineering. For the P.G. programme ,the student can specialise in areas of his choice which will later help him in fixing his career.
