Overview

Homeopathy is a method of treating the whole person to create a healthy individual. Homoeopathy, which uses neither drugs nor surgery, is based on the belief that everyone is an individual and should be treated accordingly. It first gained prominence in the 19th century after extensive pioneering work by the German physician and chemist Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843). But its origins date from the 5th century BC, when the Greek physician Hippocrates — known as the 'father of medicine' — introduced homoeopathic remedies to his medicine chest. However, it was Hippocrates' understanding of disease and how it affects our bodies, rather than his remedies that made his discoveries homoeopathic.

Nature of Work

Homoeopathy is a form of medicine that treats the body as a whole and helps it to heal itself. The name homoeopathy comes from the Greek word 'homios' meaning like and 'pathos' meaning suffering. Homoeopathy simply means treating like with like.
In practice, this means a substance that causes symptoms of illness in a well person can also cure similar symptoms when they result from illness. This view is the opposite of conventional or 'allopathic' medicine which treats illness with an antidote rather than a similar substance. Homoeopathy sees symptoms as an expression of the body's attempt to heal itself. They see them as a positive sign that the body is fighting illness and so they should not be suppressed. Homoeopathic remedies are aimed at stimulating and supporting the body's healing mechanism.
There are three main principles of homoeopathy. First, treating like with like — the patient is treated by a small amount of the substance causing the symptoms and the natural defences are stimulated. Second, the lower the dose, the better the result. Third, the remedy should be unique to the particular patient at a particular time.
Homoeopathic remedies may be used to treat almost any reversible illness in adults, children or animals.
In a homoeopathic consultation, the doctor will begin with 'taking your case'. He/she will ask numerous questions about the patient, his/her lifestyle, and make copious notes. Typically, the questions asked focus on five different aspects of a patient's life concerning the physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and general aspects. A homoeopath who is medically qualified having gone through a regular BHMS course can carry out a physical examination if it is needed. When the homoeopath is satisfied that he/she has all the information needed, he/she will prescribe a remedy. Normally, only one remedy at a time is prescribed although the prescription can change as the patient's symptoms change.
In addition to over 2000 homoeopathic remedies, homoeopaths also prescribe biochemic tissue salts. Biochemic tissue salts are homoeopathically prepared ingredients, which were introduced at the end of the 19th century by a German doctor Wilhelm Schussler.

Work Environment

Hospitals, dispensaries and polyclinics are the typical workplace of a homoeopath. However, the acceptance into the mainstream of medicine is still going on. In private practice/consulting homoeopaths are extremely popular.
Work hours are regular in hospitals and dispensaries and similar health facilities. However, popular homoeopaths are extremely busy and work very long hours. Successfully treated individuals keep coming back and bring more patients.

Physical and Psychological Requirements

Homoeopaths must have an interest in people, an ability to consider and interpret information and be good listeners and communicators. They must be self-motivated, possess emotional stability, and be able to survive the pressures and long hours of medical education and practice.

Study/Training

Bachelor of Homoeopathic System of Medicine and Surgery (BHMS) is a course of fine-and-a-half years' duration (just as the MBBS course in orthodox medicine is) and this includes 1 year of internship.
Eligibility for admission is pass in Plus Two with Physics, Chemistry and Biology as subjects. Some colleges admit students on the basis of admission tests, others on merit basis. Since the homoeopathic medical colleges are usually under State jurisdiction, the norms for admissions are laid down by the states themselves. For national level admissions, an entrance test in Physics, Chemistry and Biology of Plus Two level is required.

Employment Prospects

Homoeopathy has emerged as the strongest alternative system of medicine today all over the world and in India too.
There are comparatively fewer jobs for the BHMS graduate than for the MBBS in the formal employment sector. This is one of the most vibrant areas for private consulting and experience provides the biggest advantage. Millions the world over are using this safe reliable form of medicine and the back-up of a strong pharmaceutical industry offers tremendous support.

Career Progression

In government service, promotions are time-bound usually so every homoeopath can rise to the highest position in the cadre. In private practice, the number of hours gradually increase and a successful homoeopath may be asked to offer consultation at prominent medical centres.
Published works, research papers and attending international conferences bring about professional recognition for a homeoepath.
