Balakalakaar 2011

Alastair Pavrey a student of St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai, went on an internship to Moscow through AIESEC Mumbai. Here is his experience.

“Moscow is a very big city and the only way to get around was through public transport. I used the metro and the buses to a large extent. I enjoyed travelling this beautiful city with other AIESECers and ventured to different places. I was living with a family and was provided with a luxurious rooms and I had a great time with AIESEC Moscow, especially with my host, Olga and buddy, Aliona. They were the sole responsible in integrating me into the Moscow lifestyle and local committee.

I also attended a recruitment seminar for AIESECers at the AIESEC Head Office in Moscow. In this seminar, we had mock interviews and a whole briefing on how interns are selected online. I also got a chance to spend a day with kids from a special rehab centre in which these kids were taken alcoholic-abused homes and placed into foster homes after a certain period. In this 5 week internship I  was made to hold debates on Leadership and talk about India as a country and exchange cultural ideology.

My experience in Moscow was a breathtaking experience. As an experienced intern I would like to tell future interns that though I faced many problems, I had a great learning experience..Language is the main key power to integrate with any culture. If you are really interested in the local language, then you should go ahead and learn the basic sentences and phrases. People always like when you take an interest in their culture and language and it does give a good impression about yourself and helps you to communicate easily.

This AIESEC experience was a life transforming one and I would love to go for such programs through AIESEC.”

Balakalakaar is an annual initiative taken up by the local office of AIESEC in Mumbai. It is organized with the aim of creating an opportunity for the under privileged children of the city to discover and develop their potential in creative exercises such as Art, Dance, Drama, Music, and Craft.

Anna Pfeil

Mumbai

Anna Pfeil, an intern from Poland, working at Q2 Data Services Pvt. Ltd has a few words to say about her experience as an AIESEC Mumbai intern so far,

“I remember my first day in Mumbai very well, when I got off the plane, I felt the hot tropical air. My trainee buddy Jehan picked me up from the airport and for the first time in my life I travelled in a rickshaw. My first impressions – lots of traffic, crazy fast slaloming among other vehicles – all in all it seemed dangerous but fun. At the side of the road I could see slums and a completely different world from Europe.

Jehan instantaneously became a friend for me, my guide and my family. I was staying for the first days in her flat with her family and thanks to Jehan I managed to adapt to my new life fastly.

The day after my arrival, I went to my new workplace at Q2 Data Services. The company is small and I’m the only foreigner working here. At the beginning my colleagues from work accompanied me to my home and showed me how to function in India. I learned very quickly how to use trains, buses, what clothes to wear and how to behave.

The structure of the company is very similar to the European companies.  Work itself is not very challenging but I really enjoy great atmosphere. We eat together, go back home or hang out after work.

After the first few days I moved to my AIESEC flat in Jogeshwari with 4 other girls. The conditions are rather far from European standard – we have no washing machine, radio, tv. Our toilet is Indian style. We keep the flat clean and actually I already got used to using Indian style toilet and to wash my clothes by hand. The atmosphere in the flat is great and I always enjoy chilling in the flat with my flatmates.

Living in Jogeshwari has its advantages – it’s a very local and colourful place, where you can feel the smell of incence, hear Indian music, see goats and elephant and I really enjoy living there and even the local people already got used to me and my flatmates, the kids call us ‘didi’.

The biggest adventure is travelling in trains. Especially during rush hours. As far as night life is concerned – it’s pretty rich. We hang out all the time with AIESEC trainees. I also often go out with my work colleagues and other Indian friends. We go to flat parties, clubbing, malls, karaoke, concerts.

Mumbai is huge, crazy, hectic, smelly, sometimes dangerous and especially for a white girl it’s really challenging to live here. On the other hand it’s so alive, full of contrasts, colours, music, palmtrees, interesting people from all over the world. It’s a city that never sleeps and that has so much to offer, in terms of work and entertainment.

I’ve been here already nearly a month and it feels like home. I can see the incredible potential that this city  has and I just can’t wait to find out how it will surprise me tomorrow and what other incredible things I will explore. Sometimes I get angry at Mumbai or even hate it, but mostly I love it and I’m very happy that was my choice.

Marco Innao

Marco Innao, from Italy talks about his experience as an AIESEC Mumbai intern.

“I arrived in Mumbai 1 month ago, and so far I love it.

The city is amazing, I love how huge and crowded it is. Of course I am having some problems with commuting to work, figuring out buses, taking auto rickshaws, and dealing with traffic, but I think it is part of living in Mumbai and I am fine with it.

I had some problems with my VISA so I had a few days where I was really stressed and frustrated because I was not able to register with FRRO. I was lucky I had friends here in Mumbai who took care of me and helped me adjust to the city pretty quickly.

I was able to meet a few people from AIESEC Mumbai, they are really nice and helpful, but they are also pretty busy so it was a little hard to communicate with some of them. It was not a big problem for me, as I had my friends here, and also I know that I arrived during the festive season (Diwali) and that means a lot of people were going home for holidays.

My internship is with “Relations At Work” and I really like it. It is exactly what I was looking for when I decided to contact AIESEC. It is a consulting company that helps Italian companies that want to invest in India, and I can see myself successfully working in this field for a very long time. I have only been assigned one project so far and I find it very interesting and perfectly matching my interest and skills. I also really like my co-workers and the fact that the office is in Colaba, my favorite neighborhood in Mumbai. I know I will learn a lot and I am really excited for the next few months.”

Maximum city

Maximum city

Aliya Usman, an intern from Russia, is currently interning at ANB Consulting Pvt. Ltd. Here is what she has to say about her internship and Mumbai,

“Mumbai is not for everyone.

Some people would prefer better-organized Delhi, others peaceful Jaipur.

As for me – I love Maximum city. Maximum traffic, maximum people, maximum dust, maximum energy, and maximum affection… the list goes on.

This city has a special spirit: entrepreneurial, extremely fast developing and optimistic. This is the city of opportunities, where anything is possible. That’s why thousands of people come here; they live in slums, work hard and cherish hope. This is what differentiates Mumbai from other cities– human hope.

When you go for an internship in India, it can be a coin-toss. It can turn out to be horrible and boring or wonderful and exciting, and I’ve had a bit of both. But since I changed my internship and shifted from Delhi to Mumbai I’m the happiest AIESEC trainee in India.

My internship is in the business development department of ANB Consulting, where I work to expand our presence in the European and North American markets. We’re a fast-growing firm, and the management is very open and enthusiastic – which is inspiring because I get to learn from professionals who are passionate about what they do.

The company spirit is energetic without being stressful – which is something that I can really connect to after two years of work in AIESEC. Each employee knows what to do and we all give it every effort. At the same time, management respects individual personality, inspiring by its own performance and leading by example. I’m extremely grateful to my TN manager Priya Parekh for raising ANB Consulting Company so that I could have the chance to gain a truly great professional experience there.

AIESEC Mumbai gives us a number of internship opportunities to choose from, of life-changing opportunities. And I love them for it.”

Olaquetal Stegenta

Olaquetal Stegenta an intern from Poland arrived Mumbai two months ago, to intern at RewardPort. She describes her experience here:

“When I came to Mumbai, around two months back I was living in Powai. My internship was at Andheri West, at RewardPort. During the initial first month I found the travelling very hectic and tedious. I wasn’t enjoying myself and even thought of not returning post Christmas.

However, the initial phase passed and I was shifted to a flat in Andheri itself. This made life so much easier. A few formalities still have to be taken care of but I am sure everything will get sorted out soon.

I feel better about staying here as each day passes, as I live with some very nice roommates. Even the people of Mumbai are sympathetic and kind. I don’t I will be able to stay in Mumbai all my life, but it is fun and entertaining for the time period.

The work I do at RewardPort is sales works. Though it isn’t inclined with my background, I like the work environment. All my colleagues are helpful and friendly. I have made a lot of friends. And the best part is, I have booked a return ticket to Mumbai after X-mas.”

Saana Benurwar

Saana Benurwar went on an internship to AIESEC Szczecin, Poland through AIESEC Mumbai. She has a few words to say about her experience there,

“I would describe the time spent in Poland as not one of the, but the best experience of my life. The amount of knowledge I gathered living there was priceless. This exchange program through AIESEC Mumbai not only taught me things about people but it gave me an insight into myself. I came to know about this exchange program through a friend of mine who worked in AIESEC Mumbai. She told me about this amazing opportunity and I planned to go for it.

The first step, which I took, was to gather information about the program by attending a seminar. AIESEC Mumbai has been the bridge that helped me get to know so many things about a different culture, which are so different from ours. I am thankful to AIESEC Mumbai for the help they have provided me with and the confidence this exchange has inculcated in me.

The program that I had chosen was in Stargard Szczecinski and included working in two organizations namely Kinderhielm and Kindergarten.

Kinderhielm is the home to children who are rescued by the state from alcoholic or abusive parents or from those parents who cannot provide them with the basic needs and underage pregnant girls. I met first the director Ms. Beata Sleask and Magda, who briefed me about my work. There was an entire floor in the Kinderhielm, which belonged to the volunteers, was fully equipped with the basic facilities. Kinderhielm had children from newly born till 18 years and I chose the three age groups to work with; 10-13,14-16 and above and my job was to teach them basics of the English language. I also prepared traditional Indian Meals for all the staff and children in the Kinderhielm

In the Kindergarten I was introduced to the principal Ms. Dorota Stoska who helped me to understand my work there. Here I was working with kids belonging in the age group of 3 to 5. My basic job was to teach them alphabets and numbers of the English language and conduct various activities for them.

I also worked with Mentally and Physically challenged children and conductd workshops for them. We also had presentations in various Junior high schools and universities on the culture and traditions in our respective countries. There were interviews conducted for the Regional newspaper, for the national television and Szczecin Radio.

This program had two basic parts cultural exchange and teaching Basic English to the kids. My TN manager was Lukasz Dron who helped me a lot to get as much as information about the internship and made sure my stay was as comfortable as possible. I learned a lot from this internship and it would be a complete pleasure to go again.”

Divya Punjabi

Divya Punjabi, a senior member in AIESEC Mumbai, went on an internship to Romania through AIESEC Mumbai.

Here is what she had to say.

“Romania. Every time I hear that word, my heart skips a beat, and my face lights up. Little did I know that country would have such a huge meaning in my world, and those people would make such a big difference in my life.

I went there for the project GROW, which involves training high school Romanian students on various topics that I found supremely relevant to any young adult. It kicked off with a special 5 day conference held to train us young individuals from all over the world gathered in one country for one common purpose.

Those 5 days in such a dynamic environment seemed surreal, there were 105 delegates from 26 different countries, all learning, brainstorming and sharing together. I have never lived in such a multicultural environment ever, and I doubt I ever will. We all learnt a lot on how to deliver fresh and impactful sessions and we set out with a motive- to make a difference.

If I had one word to describe my experience there, I would say ‘unreal’. The friends I made, the sessions, the people-from-6 continents-fighting-for-one-bathroom-every-morning-situation, the time when there were so many people visiting and there were sleeping bags all over we just had no place to even put our toe on, the hitchhiking, the adventure, the rush, the power of changing peoples lives, the bittersweet goodbyes, the friendship that I’m sure will last all my life. And now I can proudly point to any country blindly and know that I have someone waiting to greet me there. All thanks to GROW. Memories of a lifetime.”

Eman Sayed

“There is nothing better than being a part of AIESEC Mumbai” – Eman Sayed

Eman Sayed Fathy, and intern from Egypt came to Mumbai 5 months ago to. She did management internship at two companies, through AIESEC Mumbai. Here is her experience,

“I searched a lot for an internship, and I couldn’t help but notice that AIESEC Mumbai offers a lot of internship to people from all over the world and in different fields. It made life so much easier for me & I challenged all the people who said that it’s not the right decision to come to Mumbai. I was lucky enough to have a professional TN Manager “Aditya Paranjpe” to help me.

I interned in two companies in the lovely Mumbai, for one of which I was a management intern working as Research Analyst in the Business Development Department, which was for two months. My second intern, where I am presently working is as a Relationship Expert – Corporate Alliance. Then I had the chance to go home or to find another internship, and with the help of my TN Manager, I was blessed enough to find another internship in 1 week.

Mumbai is such a challenge for everyone, but only the well determined manage to learn and get the best out of it. And, as I fell in love in with Mumbai since the day I arrived, I also applied for post-graduate studies here, to make it a 2 in 1 experience in life. And, I’m really happy for taking that decision.

And if you ask me now about my experience, I would tell you that I’m having the best time of my life. Mumbai is a metropolitan city, a lot of opportunities a lot of fun & entertainment, and a lot of interns. I gained, confidence, knowledge, friends, traveling trips & unforgettable moments.

And let me end by saying Mumbai’s where my life has started, is where I’m developing myself in the right atmosphere & with the right people to help. I don’t think there's anything better than being a part of AIESEC Mumbai.”
