MERCHANT NAVY
This is an ideal heaven for those who love life of travel and adventure at sea. The merchant navy consist of sea liners that transport people and goods across the seas. Merchant mariners spend extended periods at sea and earn long leave. The thrills of adventure and the lure of big money attracts lots of young men in this field.
The profession:
Merchant navy consist of bulk careers that carry cargo, tankers that carry oil, and luxury liners that carry passengers .Navigation of ships ,loading and unloading of cargo, ensuring the safety of
passengers and cargo, maintaining discipline in the vessel, adherence to national and international laws etc. are the concern of the captain. Engineering responsibilities are handled by the chief engineer. Another specialise job in the ship is that of radio officers who manages the communication network of the vessel.
Job Market:
The trained personal can seek employment with international and domestic shipping companies.
Training programme:
Training ship chanakya (TS chanakya) Navi Mumbai and marine engineering research institute (MERI) Calcutta are the primary pre-sea training marine institutions for marine education.
TS chanakya conducts a 3 yr course leading to a B.sc degree in natural science, following this ,the year on the deck training completes the programme of obtaining second mates certificates. From this position the officer has to undergo the series of examinations to go upin the hierarchy on the navigation side.
Another route to become an navigation officer is by performing as deck cadet for three years after which he can write the requisite examination for becoming navigating officer.
On the engineering side, MERI conducts a four year marine engineering programme which equips the candidate for the full fledged career in engineering. Candidate can choose between
a shore job and working on the sailing vessel.
Eligibility:
pass in 10+2/equivalent examination with physics ,chemistry and maths. Upper age limit for these programme is 20 years (25 years for sc/st) .The candidate has to fulfill certain medical norms.
Selection:
Is base on performance in the IIT-JEE the admission to the programme commences during October January every year.
