Social work is relatively the new branch of the study. Social work is not a mere profession but a service and a vocation. The social worker is impelled by the deep and selfless desire to understand and help solve social inequities. The social worker studies the group behavior community organisation, social mores and tradition ,the influence of environment on social life etc .In order to understand social formation better. The sociologist probes the genesis of the social evils in order to recommend the remedial action. The social ,economic ,cultural, psychological and physical peculiarities of the particular societies are the subject of his study.

The profession:
The social worker interacts with the people in order to help them or to overcome or adapt to their problems and debilities helping the disabled to adjust to their disabilities, offering
commiserations to the emotionally disturbed ,counseling the rape victim, showing passion to the disadvantaged, rehabilitating the drug addict and the criminal and alleviating such other evils as poverty ,unemployment, social discrimination, etc are some of the duties of the social worker.

Job Market:
The qualified person can find employment in non-government welfare organisation and 
as welfare officers in corporate houses. They can also function as criminologists ,psychiatric social worker, family welfare officers, child welfare officers, juvenile delinquent welfare workers. They also have the useful role to play in the drug and alcohol de-addiction centre, old age homes, orphanages, crisis management units ,rural education and health etc. Thus the trained personal have the myriad opportunities to usefully serve the society.

Training programme:
Bachelor of social work (BSW) and master in social work (MSW) are regular programmes offered in various centers. BSW is the three year course available to those who have completed +2/equivalent. MSW is a 2 yr programme offered after BSW/B.A (sociology) /B.Ain any social science. Those interested in pursuing the career in education or research old pursue M.phil and Ph.d in this field.
