SOFTWARE ENGINEERING
Overview
Computers need to be told exactly what to do. Software is the set of codes that tells a computer what to do. Without applications programmes or software, computer hardware would be unable to perform the tasks that make our lives easier.
Everyday business, scientists, government agencies, etc. encounter complex problems that they cannot solve manually. This could be due to the fact that the problem is too complicated or would take too much time to calculate the appropriate solution. The data can be processed efficiently and fast with the extensive help of computer. Computer software engineers define and analyse problem in business or sciences and help develop computer software applications that can effectively solve them.
Software engineering is the application of mathematical and scientific principles to the design, implementation, validation, and management of computer software for mainframe and personal computers. Software engineers design, test and maintain large-scale software, frequently utilising ‘library routines’, written by programmers.
The software sector needs a wide range of personnel - data entry operators, programmers, analysts, systems designers and so on.
Nature of Work
Software engineers can be involved in the design and development of software systems for control and automation of manufacturing, business, and management processes. They may research, design and test operating systems software, compliers - software that coverts programmes for faster processing - and network distribution software. Software engineers or software developers working in applications development analyse users’ needs and design, create and modify general computer applications software or specialised utility programmes.
Software engineers first research specific problems and investigate ways in which computers can be programmed to perform certain functions. They then develop software applications customised to the needs and desires of the business or organisation.
Software engineers are employed by consulting firms who undertake software projects for different clients on an individual basis. Large organisations may employ them full-time to develop software customised to their needs. They work in teams, which include systems analysts, programmers and systems engineers. Much of the work is with people, and team skills are developed.
Software engineers also possess strong programming skills but they are more concerned with analysing and solving programming problems than with writing code for programmes. Some software engineers develop both packaged and systems software or create customised software applications for clients.
Specialisations
Software engineers working for a particular industry are expected to have a certain level of proficiency in the functions of that industry. Software engineering work is done in many fields, including medical, industrial, military, communications, aerospace, scientific, and other commercial businesses. The nature of job of a software engineer, thus, differs from industry to industry and project to project. Specialisations are dependent upon the organisation and the role assigned to or picked up by an individual.
Software designers are responsible for the creation of new ideas and design detail for both pre-packaged and customised computer software.
Work Environment
Software engineering is extremely detail-oriented work and desk-centred in the structured office environment. The work requires a well-organised and precise approach only possible in a calm and organised environment with minimum confusion. Initially, they have to meet clients in their offices to determine exactly what they require. Only after this fact-gathering process is over do they draw up the detailed proposal which includes estimates of time and cost allocations. There is teamwork involved and there is always a lot of interaction required with the client to keep project goals clear and learn about any changes as quickly as possible.
Physical and psychological Requirements
The work of a software engineer is extremely detail-oriented so one needs to be well organised and precise. Communication skills are important to find out the needs of the client and work accordingly. Defining the clients’ problems and analysing their needs requires an analytical approach.
Excellent mathematical skills indicate potential for the analytical work of the software engineers. Students in high school contemplating careers in software should, therefore, opt for Science, Maths and computer-related courses. Proficiency in English, patience and the ability to work under pressure are keys to success in software engineering.
Study/Training
Among the more accepted programmes for entry into software engineering jobs are the 4-years BE/BTech in Computer Engineering or Computer Science & Engineering or Information Technology. Electronics engineers can make a bid too. A 3-year BSc in Computer Science could be a preparatory programme for proceeding to post graduation in Computer Science or Computer applications. Master of Computer Applications after graduation, preferably with Maths at least upto the Plus two level is another viable route.
Commercial certifications from Microsoft, Novell, Oracle, etc., are popular to train professionals for working on their products. Current opportunities should be investigated in the light of their employment potential. A science or engineering, rather than a commerce or arts background is considered advantageous for these courses and for easier access to employment opportunities.

are useful for software engineering.
Employment Prospects
BEs/BTechs from top engineering institutes/ colleges and MCAs from reputed universities/colleges are the first choice for the best jobs in software engineering starting with monthly salaries in the range of Rs.10,000 -20,000. Lack of formal education and work experience can be limiting factors when looking at a career in software engineering.
With all the demands made on computers from all industries the number of job in software engineering are expected to grow faster than the average for all jobs. Since technology changes so rapidly, software engineers have to constantly upgrade and update themselves in the latest developments to be well equipped.
Software is a great career with an extraordinarily bright future around the world. It is perhaps the only industry where the export industry eclipses the domestic one.
India is uniquely placed in the global software market to remain one of the dominant players in global outsourcing of software services.
Career Progression
The upward rise is tremendous for those who demonstrate potential and loyalty - you could become a millionaire in your thirties. Software engineers who demonstrate leadership qualities a thorough technical know-how may become project leaders who are responsible for full-scale software development projects. Overall they do both technical and managerial work.
Software engineers with experience as project team leaders may advance to a position of software manager (designations differ between companies) running a large research and development department. In some cases they may need to travel, solicit new business and contribute to the general management strategy of a company. Many software engineers with management qualifications can advance faster to these positions.
Working abroad is a popular move for software professionals with work experience.

Admission Procedure: Candidates seeking admission to one or any other REC are required to submit only one application. Application forms are to be obtained from and submitted to the Principals of the RECs having jurisdiction over the area from which the candidates have passed the qualifying examination. The location of the school/college attended by the candidate for the qualifying examination is taken as the criteria.
The jurisdiction of the 17 RECs is indicated alongside.
Notification of the admission procedure for BE/BTech./BSc.Engg./BArch degree programmes at RECs is issued by the Department of Education, Ministry of HRD: detailed notification calling for applications for entrance test/admission is issued by the respective RECs.
Admission Procedures in the different State Engineering colleges
State Level Admissions into the various engineering colleges/programmes in Computer Science & Engineering are under each State Board or Directorate of Technical Education/equivalent.
Admission is primarily for those candidates who are domiciled in the state [completed Class 10 and Class 12 examinations from schools/colleges within the state or whose parents belong to the state. Outside state candidates may avail of admission provisions by contacting the authorities listed below under each state.

THE DOEACC SCHEME
The Department of Electronics of the Government of India (DOE) is operating a scheme, namely, the Department of Electronics Accreditation of Computer Courses (DOEACC).
The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) which is the statutory body in the field of technical education has delegated the responsibility to DOE which has authorised the DOEACC Society to implement the scheme.
Under the scheme, computer training institutes/organisations in the non-formal sector, subject to meeting well-defined norms and criteria are given accreditation for conducting specified levels of courses.
The DOEACC Society does not conduct any training classes for any of these courses.
There are four levels of courses under the scheme, namely;
* ‘0’ — Foundation level,
* ‘A’ — Advanced Diploma level,
* ‘B’ — MCA level and
* ‘C’ — MTech level in computer science.
Following the progressive path designed by DOEACC you can reach the MCA level in 4 years after 10+2. 'O'LEVEL: Eligibility - related career prospects
(i) 10+2/10+ ITI Certificate (1 year) and (ii) followed by 1-year 'O' level course or 1-year work experience in Information Technology; or in place of (i) and (ii)
Pass in NCVT-DP& CS (Data Preparation & Computer Software) and you can bypass the 1-year '0' level course or the work experience.
After clearing 'O' level, you can apply for positions of

* Lab Demonstrator
‘A’ LEVEL
(i) Level 'OVGovt. recognised Polytechnic Engineering. Diploma after class lOth/Graduate and (ii) followed by 1 year accredited A' level course or l year work experience in Information Technology; or in place of (I) and (ii) Govt.-recognised Polytechnic Engineering. Diploma after 10+2/Graduate and an accredited 'A' level course in each case which can be done concurrently.

‘B’ LEVEL
(i) Level A'/Govt.-recognised PPDCA (Post Polytechnic Diploma in Computer Applications)/Govt. Polytechnic Engineering. Diploma/Graduate and followed by (ii) an accredited 3 year 'B' level course or by 2 years work experience in Information Technology; Govt.-recognised Polytechnic Engineering Diploma or Graduates require 3 years work experience.
Exemptions in some subjects for those who have passed A' Level or Govt.-recognised PPDCA/PGDCA. After 'A level you complete 'B' level in 2 years.

‘C’ LEVEL
(i) Level 'B'/B Tech/BE/MCA/MSc/Master's degree in Statistics/Mathematics/Operations Research/MBA (equivalent with BSc/BA (Mathematics/Statistics), GATE followed in each case by a one and a half year accredited 'C' level course OR by one and a half year work experience in Information Technology.

You can acquire any of these qualifications by undergoing the particular level of the DOEACC accredited course from the institutions accredited for conducting the relevant course and pass the examinations conducted by the DOEACC Society.
Also, working professionals can also appear in these examinations directly provided they possess the prescribed relevant experience for the particular level.
In any of the above cases, the candidates should have the requisite educational qualification as indicated in the eligibility criteria.
ACCREDITATION; Fact File
* Accreditation is for a computer course and the institute is not accredited as such. It is applicable for the course at the specified location only.
* Accreditation given in the name of an institute is not automatically applicable to its branches/centres/head office/franchisees/licensees, etc. Each centre is required to have independent accreditation for each level.
* Accreditation is a continuous process and new institutions get accredited from time to time. Accreditation given to an existing institute may be withdrawn if it fails to meet the specified norms. It is therefore essential that the candidate should satisfy herself about the status of accreditation in respect of an institute before enrolling himself for the accredited course.
* An institute, soon after being accredited for conducting a DOEACC course, is granted a PARCHMENT CERTIFICATE specifying the fact of accreditation that the institute is required to display as proof of accreditation.
* Accreditation is provisional initially which is upgraded to full accreditation provided the performance criteria are met by an institute during the provisional accreditation period.
* Candidates enrolling for the accredited course should check the validity period of accreditation.
A booklet containing the names of institutions approved to conduct DOEACC computer courses (O, A, B & C levels) is brought out periodically and may be obtained from the DOEACC Society, free of cost either in person or through post.
